WiFi-based Passive Radar Sensor in the ATOM Project: Experimental Results

چکیده
In this paper, a new concept for increasing the airport security is proposed. The proposed innovative system is studied and developed in the ATOM (Airport detection and Tracking Of dangerous Materials by active and passive sensors arrays) project, funded by the European Commission. It foresees the definition of a multi-sensor approach that integrates active and passive radar sensors with currently used surveillance systems. The conceived system covers not only the access to the gate area but also the terminal area, actually monitored mainly by Closed Circuit Television (CCTV), aiming at increasing the security level in that area. The enhanced capability of detecting and tracking dangerous tools and materials without passengers collaboration is another key point of ATOM concept. This work is focused on the activities performed, within ATOM, by DIET Dept. of University of Rome “La Sapienza”, related to the development of an effective WiFi-based Passive Bistatic Radar (PBR). Specifically, the processing scheme, the prototypal receiver architecture, and dedicated tests performed in a real indoor environment are described.

FM-based Passive Bistatic Radar in ARGUS 3D: Experimental results
Conventional civil Air Traffic Control (ATC) systems are able to detect targets and identify collaborative aircrafts in the air space but they don’t ensure full coverage at low altitudes, in presence of non-cooperative targets (NCTs) and aircraft (A/C) with a low value of radar cross section (RCS). This paper describes the ARGUS 3D (AiR GUidance and Surveillance 3D) project funded by the Europe...
متن کاملSensorless Sensing with WiFi
Can WiFi signals be used for sensing purpose? The growing PHY layer capabilities of WiFi has made it possible to reuse WiFi signals for both communication and sensing. Sensing via WiFi would enable remote sensing without wearable sensors, simultaneous perception and data transmission without extra communication infrastructure, and contactless sensing in privacy-preserving mode. Due to the popul...
متن کاملA Soft-Input Soft-Output Target Detection Algorithm for Passive Radar
Abstract: This paper proposes a novel scheme for multi-static passive radar processing, based on soft-input soft-output processing and Bayesian sparse estimation. In this scheme, each receiver estimates the probability of target presence based on its received signal and the prior information received from a central processor. The resulting posterior target probabilities are transmitted to the c...
متن کاملWiFi Fingerprint Localization in Open Space
In recent years, WiFi fingerprint-based localization has received much attention due to its deployment practicability. In this work, we investigate the impact of different indoor environmental factors on the performance of WiFi-fingerprinting. We find that, WiFi-fingerprinting highly depends on the deployed indoor environment. In an open space, it is quite challenging to find spatially varying ...
متن کاملEfficiency of Target Location Scenarios in the Multi-Transmitter Multi-Receiver Passive Radar
Multi-transmitter multi-receiver passive radar, which locates target in the surveillance area by the reflected signals of the available opportunistic transmitter from the target, is of interest in many applications. In this paper, we investigate different signal processing scenarios in multi-transmitter multi-receiver passive radar. These scenarios include decentralized processing of reference ...
